| St. Maarten - A European Flair |
Sint Maarten is the southern half of the island known as SaintMartin/SintMaarten. Commonly known as St. Martin or the "Dutch Side". As both the Dutch and French laid claim to this island back in 1648, they agreed to split it, so a Dutchman and a Frenchman walked around the island and where they met designated the boundary (so the story goes). The Dutch side has seen much development of highrise condos and waterfront communities. It is known for good shopping and casinos. It also sports good beaches (some of them topless!). The adjoining French side of the island, Saint Martin, is famous for excellent cuisine, with numerous restaurants.
