| Turks and Caicos Islands Overview |
The Turks and Caicos islands boast some of the world's best white powder beaches, crystal clear blue water with incredible snorkeling just offshore and an excellent golf course. Turks and Caicos real estate offers beachfront condos, oceanview condos, and residential houses. There are many reasons why TCI is a choice location if you are looking for Caribbean real estate.
- Currency is American dollar.
- Anyone can buy Turks and Caicos real estate.
- Outstanding beaches, snorkeling, diving, and golfing.
- Ideal temperatures and cooling ocean breezes.
- Interesting boutiques and restaurants.
- Tax haven - No annual property tax. No income tax. No capital gains tax.
- Title to real estate is guaranteed by the Crown.
- Canada friendly island (they actually tried to join Canada - 3 times!)
The TCI has seen most of its development within the past 15 years. Luxury hotels and condominiums now line the miles of beach. Typically condo projects have been high end and this has resulted in the impression that all Turks and Caicos real estate is priced out of reach for many people. However there are condos just minutes from the beach that are more reasonably price, although prices can rise into the millions for prime locations and suites. TCI may be an option for you if you are looking to buy Caribbean real estate.
The Canadian Connection
The Turks and Caicos Islands have had a long association with Canada. If things had gone differently 30 years ago, they might today be a tropical 11th province. There have been attempts to join TCI to Canada 3 times. In the 1970's Max Saltzman, Member of Parliament from Galt Ontario (now Cambridge), proposed that the TCI join with Canada. There was much support for this campaign both in Canada and the Turks. However in the end, for whatever political reasons, the marriage did not take place. Again in the mid '80s, a Conservative MP and some TCI businessmen raised the issue, having found that 90% of islanders favoured a union. This also failed. More recently, in 2003 a Conservative MP called for investigating an association between Canada and the TCI. We still don't have our official place in the sun, but Canadians are finding they don't need an 11th province to enjoy the benefits of these islands. (Besides isn't the idea to leave all those taxes behind?)
Today there is a strong Canadian influence in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Many Canadians live there full or part time. Some have been involved in developing hotels and resorts. Scotia Bank and the Royal Bank have a presence there. Canadians are even contributing to the islands' welfare - approximately one third of the reserve fire fighters are from Canada. In short you will feel right at home on these Canada friendly islands!
